You get wet on a boat day whatever the poncho promises, so plan the rest of the afternoon around it. Canyoning and abseiling carry weight and age limits, and a guide who checks them at the van. Swimming is banned at some famous pools and fine at others. And flow is seasonal: the dry months turn a thundering drop into a stain on the rock.

Journey Behind the Falls
Tunnels bored through the rock behind the Horseshoe come out on a deck a few metres from the falling water. The noise arrives before the view, and the spray takes no interest in which way you are facing. Lifts run down from the Table Rock building on the Canadian side. The lower deck shuts once the ice builds, so a winter visit is the upper portals only.

Ouzoud Falls
Three hours north east of Marrakech the Ouzoud river falls a hundred metres in stages into a green pool, and small painted boats run right up under the spray. Barbary macaques work the olive groves along the path down, uninterested in you and very interested in bread. Go in spring, while the melt is still coming off the mountains.

Tegenungan and Tibumana are a short drive out of Ubud and a shorter walk down. Tumpak Sewu, over in East Java, is a rope-and-ladder scramble into an amphitheatre of falling water. Most of it sells as a driver plus a guide, which is why the prices read so low.
